Headline News!

In Literacy this week 6JT have been looking at different newspaper articles. Looking at the article below can you come up with a snazzy headline? Could you identify one feature that makes it a really good newspaper article?

The Chancellor George Osborne has said there'll be free school meals for all Year 1 and Year 2 kids in English primary schools from next September.

He made a speech today in Parliament about the government's spending plans, called the Autumn Statement.

There'll also be an extra £150m to update and build kitchens and dining rooms in primary schools in England.

The Labour party says the government's done nothing about the "cost of living crisis" facing many people in Britain.

Direct and reported speech!

Direct to Reported Speech.

We can report what somebody says without needing to use speech marks. For example,

“I want to be a hero!” announced Ruskin.

becomes

Ruskin announced that he wanted to be a hero.

Notice these things:

1.     You have to write reported speech in the past tense.

2.     The word that is important.

“I like your tie!” commented Hamza.

Hamza commented that he liked my tie.

Now change these;

1.     “This work is easy!” exclaimed Zia.

2.     “I want to go home,” pleaded Mr Staiger.

3.     “It’s playtime,” announced Ms Foley.

4.     “I know the answered,” Samantha whispered to Alisha.

5.     “I want children to work hard,” demanded the strict teacher.

6.     “I’m too tired to carry on,” complained Arsalan.

Can you for homework complete the 6 conversions and also tell me why a certain phrase is highlighted in RED.

Match Report

This week in year 6 we have been looking at recount texts. Recount texts are often found in Newspapers about all the different events that are going on around the world. I often find myself going to the back of the newspaper so I can read all the football match reports, especially about my favourite team, Arsenal! I was lucky enough to have some spare time this weekend to go and watch them in action so thought I would have a go at writing a match report and see how many of the features of a recount text I could remember! Have a read!

Sunday 22nd September at the Emirates Stadium saw Arsenal overcome Stoke in a gruelling 3-1 display and sent Arsenal to the top of the Barclays Premier League. A crowd of over 60,000 saw Aaron Ramsey and the rest of the Arsenal team put on a hard working performance.

Before the game had started the home fans were all talking about the new record signing Mesut Ozil and it was clear everyone was very much looking forward to seeing the new German signing playing his first home game. As soon as the stadium announcer called out his name the fans applauded and cheered his name. Sadly there was also some bad news, Theo Walcott, Arsenal's midfielder, was injured and wouldn't be able to play. The Stoke fans were extremely happy about this as they knew he was as quick as a cheetah and without him their team would stand a much better chance of winning!

The game started extremely quickly and it was very clear from the start that the Arsenal players were playing with a lot more confidence, style and teamwork. It only took 5 minutes before the home team were one- nil up after Aaron Ramsey tapped home a rebound after the ball smashed against the post. The fans sung with delight as Aaron sprinted frantically towards them in celebration of another one of his goals (he has got 7 this season already!).

Arsenal contiued to move the ball quickly and the magic, marvellous Mathieu Flamini really showed the crowd that he is as brave as a lion and put in some bone-crunching tackles! However from out of nowhere Stoke were the next team to score which really shocked the crowd, the stadium was a graveyard and there was not a sound made as Arsenal tried to get back in front with another goal.

As time went by it was obvious that they were going to score and it didn't take long before another Arsenal goal went in. From a corner an Arsenal defender soared majestically into the sky and headed the ball. The ball trickled as slow as a snail into the goal and like a volcano, the crowd erupted!

After half time Arsenal continued to play like superstars and scored very early in the second half. From then on they kept the ball extremely well and held on to win the game 3-1. The man of the match was given to Mesut Ozil, who really showed the crowd that he could become a huge star with the team in the future.

After the game the Arsenal manger, Arsene Wenger was full of praise for Mesut Ozil saying that he had played really well and was impressed with his performance, "When you look at his numbers, the assists are not a coincidence, they are a reality of his game. He is a great player."

CAN YOU GIVE THIS PIECE A STAR AND A WISH? OR COULD YOU WRITE YOUR OWN MATCH REPORT OR RECOUNT THAT COULD BE FOUND IN A NEWSPAPER? MAKE SURE YOU PROOF READ YOUR WORK, I HAVN'T AND I THINK THERE MAY BE A FEW ERRORS! CAN YOU SPOT THEM?
